June 2014 Update!

Hi all Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour,

TWO VERY URGENT MATTERS have come up in the last 24 hours..

1) The Historic old Bailey Broom Company is to be demolished! If you can make it, please come at 8 am tomorrow morning (Thursday) to protest! Corner of Rideau and Cataraqui Streets. It is that kooky brick building that everyone loves.

A little bit of its history:

In 1837 the Bailey Broom Company was established in Brantford by Mr.William Bailey. It moved first to Guelph and then in 1863 to Kingston. For forty six years, Mr. William Bailey carried on the business, building it up year by year into what became one of Kingston’s most important industries.

Initially established on Queen Street, the company moved to Rideau Street where they were renowned as an early example of modern one-story factory design. The buildings were constructed of brick and concrete and covered an area of three hundred and fifty feet by two hundred, with a railroad siding directly behind the shipping room. Equipped with all the latest broom-making machinery, their staff of forty turned out a daily average of one hundred and forty dozen brooms. Their establishment was a veritable hive of activity. Outside of business, Mr. Bailey was prominent in curling circles.

2) The City’s first public meeting re the new Transportation Master Plan!

The Open House on the City’s Kingston Transportation Master Plan (KTMP) update is set for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 23 in Memorial Hall, City Hall, 216 Ontario St.

Come and speak up about the Wellington St. Extension! We need people to speak up!

Thanks so very much,

Mary

PS: If you feel in the mood, bring a favourite beverage to the amphitheatre in Market Square at 7 pm tomorrow night (Thursday) where I will be doing a pitch to Awesome Kingston to try and get $1000 to pay for renting the park for our street art festival –ON THE WALL. It would be great to have a few supporters.
