Mid-August Update 2014

Dear Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour,

Two sad news items:

1) We are so very sorry to have to say that the Theatre on a Barge has been cancelled!

Transport Canada refused to give this wonderful company a licence to travel and perform in Canadian waters.  True, the message of the show was somewhat provocative but surely not enough to warrant censorship from our government!  We are truly saddened.  This company has been welcomed all over the world and now, returning to the country of its birth, it has been refused entry.

2) We are also very sorry to say that our Zimbabwayan sculpture camp has been cancelled.  Chaka, the lead sculptor felt he simply couldn’t handle two camps in the summer and he wanted to spend more time with his Marimba band.

Now the fun stuff:

1) ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, FULL STEAM AHEAD WITH “ON THE WALL”, Kingston’s first official juried street art festival!  Artists will begin work on the wall this Monday, Aug 18 and are free to work from Monday to Sunday from noon until 8 pm each day.

2) ON SATURDAY, AUG 23 – OUR GRAND CELEBRATION OF ARTISTS AND THE ARTS! At 3 pm, Mayor Gerretsen will cut the cake and the celebrations will begin.  From 3:30 until 8 pm will be participatory arts and sports activities for the whole family including dance, poetry, painting, improv, singing, tai chi, children’s games, slacklining, etc. along with music and food.  Come and watch the artists paint and join in the fun.

3) AND – CHECK OUT OUR INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN:
ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT!
http://igg.me/at/onthewall
A GREAT SHORT VIDEO about the event.  It would be so great if you could give even $5 to help us raise enough money to pay the artists and the leaders of Saturday’s events.  Every little bit really does make a difference!

4) Tomorrow’s Family Friday event (Facebook – Picnics in the Park) will be a scavenger hunt occurring for a change in Emma Martin Park just north of the Woolen Mill.  Bring a picnic and join in. (Doug  Fluhrer Park was rented by others this week.)

5) ALSO HOT OFF THE PRESS!  ANNOUNCING THE MAYORAL CANDIDACY OF BRENDA SLOMKA.  She will be at City Hall tomorrow, Friday, Aug 15, at 12:30 to meet the press.  Your presence is requested.  She will be revealing her platform.www.brendaslomka.ca

6) For further information on ON THE WALL, check out the ON THE WALL Facebook page.

7) For further updates on the Bailey Broom Company, check out the Facebook page – Friends of Bailey Broom Factory.

See you at “ON THE WALL”.  We are really excited about it.  22 artists and groups doing wonderful things all week with the Celebration of the Artists and all the Arts on Saturday!  Should be amazing!

Cheers,
